What is presented here sheds light on key issues that confront us and the world today in terms of U.S. domestic and foreign policy, issues as relevant today as when Mark O. Hatfield addressed them as a U.S. Senator.

This site focuses on the first eight years (1967-1975) of Mark O. Hatfield's career in the Senate. The Hatfield speeches, legislation and excerpts from his book posted on this site embody the essential characteristics of his fundamental beliefs about America and its future.

On behalf of the board and staff at Pacific Northwest Foundation, I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the input of those with whom I closely worked while in Senator Hatfield's office during the late 60's and early 70's. This site would not have been possible without the love, example and support of two men: my father Howard Cook and his brother, my uncle Charlie.

And a special thanks to Peter Jessen who not only volunteered untold hours to help edit, organize, research and copy the documents in this site he also was an unwavering source of enthusiasm and commitment.
